First Impression

To visit Kyoto during the peak of Hanami season feels like stepping into a living watercolour painting. My timing couldn’t have been more perfect; the city was draped in a delicate veil of full-bloom sakura. From the moment I stepped into Hotel Okura Kyoto Okazaki Bettei, I felt an immediate sense of “Kyoto Aesthetic”—a refined, hushed luxury that respects the passage of time.

I was instantly mesmerised by the ‘Garden of Springs,’ a landscape that seems to breathe with the season. The hotel’s unique location within the precincts of the Okazaki Betsuin Temple allows for a rare, seamless connection between the property and the sacred, natural beauty of the temple grounds. This spiritual proximity is felt in the lobby and dining areas, where the greenery feels like an extension of the interior. A highlight of my arrival was the warm welcome from General Manager Goshi Kamata, whose genuine kindness set a hospitable tone for the entire stay.

The Bettei Suite Corner

The hotel features 60 guest rooms designed as “Mountain Villas” in the heart of Higashiyama. Staying in the signature Bettei Suite was a masterclass in understated elegance. As the hotel’s crown jewel, it offers a level of immersion that is rare even in a city as historic as Kyoto. It feels less like a hotel room and more like a private sanctuary where the boundaries between the indoors and the sacred grounds outside simply melt away.

The true magic of the Bettei Suite lies in its North-facing private balcony. Facing North, it offers an intimate view of the Higashi Honganji Okazaki Betsuin Temple, with the iconic gate of Konkai Komyoji Temple standing proudly in the distance—a quintessentially Kyoto silhouette.

The Bettei Suite Corner

Inside, the luxury is tactile and deeply intentional. The hotel has curated a selection of amenities that turn daily routines into restorative rituals.

  • For Organic luxury from Bamford, I am particularly impressed by the choice of Bamford toiletries; the botanical scents of the body wash, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion felt perfectly aligned with the “Garden of Springs” theme.
  • For skincare, the inclusion of Plusui’s “Aqua Supplement” line was a thoughtful touch, providing the active beauty hydration needed after a day spent in the spring breeze.
  • For Bath Rituals: Fragrant bath salts from KYO no HINOKI that turn a soak into a forest-bathing experience.
  • For Technology: The attention to detail extends even to the grooming technology. Using the ReFa Beautech Dryer BX W felt like a professional salon treatment; its Dual Sensing technology and Hydro Ions ensured my hair stayed hydrated and smooth.

Every element of this suite is designed to make you feel like a welcomed guest in a refined, high-end residence.

Free-Flowing at the Lounge

After a long afternoon spent “sakura hunting” through the Okazaki neighborhood, the hotel lounge became my favourite sanctuary. It is masterfully designed to frame the “Garden of Spring,” where the meticulously raked sand patterns create a rhythmic, calming visual. Sitting here with a drink, watching the light shift over the blossoms and the sand, is the ultimate way to unwind. It’s a space that encourages you to slow down and match the pace of the garden.

In-Room Dining Delights

Sometimes, the comfort of a suite is too good to leave. I decided to sample the in-room dining menu, and the team delivered a flawless meal directly to the Bettei Suite. I opted for the Wagyu steak served with golden French fries. The beef was buttery and rich, cooked to a perfect medium-rare, providing a comforting, high-end indulgence as I watched the evening shadows fall over the temple grounds from my window.

Morning Service (Jinjō) at Okazaki Betsuin

Because the hotel shares its grounds with the Shinshu Otani-ha Okazaki Betsuin, guests have the rare opportunity to experience the Morning Service (Jinjō). Walking into the temple at dawn is a soul-enriching experience.

This site, known as “Shinran Yashiki,” holds deep historical weight. It is where Shinran Shonin built a humble hermitage after descending from Mt. Hiei. Knowing that the 20th head priest of Higashi Honganji, Daishin Nyoryo, established this temple in 1801 adds a layer of profound history to your morning stroll. It isn’t just a garden; it’s a walk through centuries of devotion.

Breakfast at Nouvelle Epoque

Breakfast at Nouvelle Epoque is a vibrant tribute to the region. The menu utilizes ingredients from Miyama, a remote mountain village in northern Kyoto celebrated for its pristine water.

The meal was a “blissful” start to the day. I particularly enjoyed the Miyama yogurt, made from pure raw milk, paired with tart homemade jams. The “vegetable garden-style” salad was a visual feast, featuring crisp, colorful greens that tasted of the earth. Splashed with a signature homemade dressing, every bite felt like a celebration of Kyoto’s natural bounty.

The Sakura Corridor at Okazaki Park

Just a short walk from the hotel lies Okazaki Park, home to a breathtaking corridor of approximately 500 cherry trees. This is arguably one of Kyoto’s most iconic cherry blossom avenues. I spent hours wandering under the canopy, admiring the diversity of the blooms—from the classic pale Someiyoshino to the dramatic, drooping branches of the Shidarezakura (weeping cherry) and the lush, multi-petaled Yaezakura.

Heian-jingu Shrine

No visit to Okazaki is complete without paying respects at Heian-jingu Shrine. The massive vermilion Otorii gate is a marvel of scale, standing over 24 meters high. Inside the shrine grounds, the architecture is equally stunning. I made sure to stop by the Soryuro Tower and admire the Sakon no Sakura, a tree that embodies the regal history of the ancient capital.

Cherry Blossom Night Illumination at To-ji Temple

To end the journey, I headed to To-ji Temple for a special “yozakura” (night sakura) viewing. The experience was nothing short of magical. Seeing Japan’s tallest five-story pagoda illuminated against the obsidian sky, mirrored perfectly in the temple pond, is a sight I will never forget.

The warm lights on the weeping cherry trees created a stark, artistic contrast against the dark, traditional wood of the Kondo and Kodo halls. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, To-ji offers a sense of grandeur that is only amplified by the quiet, ethereal glow of the blossoms at night.

Stefano's Verdict

My stay at Hotel Okura Kyoto Okazaki Bettei during Hanami was the pinnacle of “Slow Travel.” The hotel doesn’t just offer a room; it offers a bridge to Kyoto’s soul. By combining the modern luxury of the Bettei Suite with the ancient serenity of the Okazaki Betsuin temple, the hotel creates a space where you can truly “breathe.”

If you are looking for an inspiring, high-end sanctuary that honors Kyoto’s heritage while providing every modern comfort, this is it. It is a 10/10 experience for anyone wanting to see the cherry blossoms not just as a tourist, but as a guest of the city’s rich history.
