Tokyo’s luxury landscape is set for a profound transformation. Hilton recently announced a landmark agreement to bring the LXR Hotels & Resorts brand to the Japanese capital by 2027, centered on the rebranding of the legendary Hotel Gajoen in Meguro.

For a city that masterfully balances hyper-modernity with profound tradition, this partnership represents more than just a new hotel opening—it is a preservation of cultural history married to the personalized, experiential luxury that defines the LXR brand.

A Century of Japanese Heritage

Hotel Gajoen is far from an ordinary hotel. Long revered as a symbol of Tokyo’s cultural identity, the property boasts nearly 100 years of history. It is perhaps most famous as the home of the Hyakudan Kaidan (Hundred-Step Staircase), a designated Tangible Cultural Property by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

With its intricately detailed ceiling paintings, black lacquered walls, and singular design, the property offers a level of artistry that is increasingly rare in the modern hospitality world. Under the LXR banner, this heritage will be carefully stewarded, ensuring that guests experience an immersive, “destination-led” stay that feels deeply rooted in its Meguro surroundings.

What Guests Can Expect

Following a phased program of enhancements to its guest rooms and facilities, the hotel is expected to resume operations for its rooms and restaurants in mid-2026, ahead of the official 2027 debut.

The refined property will offer:

  • 60 Guest Rooms: Including expansive suites exceeding 100 square metres.

  • Curated Dining: Five distinct culinary destinations.

  • Wellness and Events: A dedicated spa, fitness centre, and approximately 5,700 square metres of meeting and event space.

Why This Matters for Tokyo

The Meguro neighbourhood is one of Tokyo’s most atmospheric districts, particularly in the spring, when hundreds of cherry trees line the nearby Meguro River. By integrating this iconic site into the LXR collection—which already includes ROKU KYOTO, LXR Hotels & Resorts—Hilton is signalling a strong commitment to Japan’s rising luxury segment.

As Hilton continues to expand its footprint across Japan, from Tokyo to the upcoming properties in Hiroshima and Niseko, the debut of LXR in Meguro stands out as a “natural fit.” It caters perfectly to the modern, experience-seeking traveller who values not just the amenities of a five-star stay, but the cultural resonance and storied past of the destination itself.
