First Impression
There is a specific kind of magic in returning to a place that feels like home, even before you’ve checked in. Stepping through the doors of Hotel Okura Amsterdam, the transition from the crisp winter air of the city to the refined serenity of the lobby is instantaneous.
It is always a pleasure to return to this sanctuary of Japanese hospitality. There is a profound sense of comfort in seeing familiar faces who anticipate your needs before you even speak—a hallmark of the “Omotenashi” spirit that the Okura has perfected.
A special mention must go to Isabel, whose warmest welcome on arrival sets the tone for the entire stay. Her genuine care and professional grace make the arrival process feel less like a formal transaction and more like a long-awaited reunion. In a world of fleeting travel experiences, it is these personal connections and the consistent excellence of the team that make the Okura Amsterdam a destination I return to time and time again.

YAMAZATO
Dining at Yamazato during the winter season is more than a meal; it is a serene journey into the heart of Japanese tradition. As the first traditional Kaiseki restaurant outside Japan to earn a Michelin star, the quality here remains peerless.
The atmosphere, overlooking the frost-touched Japanese garden, provided a tranquil backdrop, while the service—delivered by staff in elegant kimonos—epitomized Omotenashi.
It was nothing short of extraordinary. This was my first introduction to a formal Kaiseki meal, and the progression of flavours was a revelation in culinary artistry.
Each dish was a highlight in its own right. The Yamazato Sashimi selection was incredibly fresh, with the lobster. The Kotohogizakana was presented with stunning precision, followed by the Black Cod, which was perfectly glazed and buttery. However, the Japanese Wagyu Steak was the true showstopper—rich, marbled to perfection, and practically dissolving on the tongue.
The evening was made even more special by a thoughtful birthday surprise from the staff, adding a personal touch to the impeccable “Omotenashi” service. Dining here, with a view of the serene Japanese garden, is a must-do for anyone seeking authentic luxury in Amsterdam. A truly world-class experience!
SERRE
Breakfast at Serre is the ultimate way to embrace a slow, winter morning in Amsterdam. Bathed in soft light, the restaurant offers a front-row seat to the city’s seasonal charm. The absolute highlight of the morning was the Shokupan—the Japanese milk bread was pillowy, cloud-soft, and toasted to perfection. Pairing the rich, buttery sweetness of the bread with a hot coffee while gazing out at the serene, snow-covered views through the floor-to-ceiling windows was a moment of pure bliss. It is a refined, tranquil experience that perfectly balances Japanese precision with the cozy warmth of a winter holiday.
Stefano's Verdict
My final verdict on the Hotel Okura Amsterdam was nothing short of a winter fairytale. Waking up in my suite to a panoramic, snow-dusted view of the city offered a rare sense of tranquility and magic. The culinary journey was equally sublime; dinner at Yamazato remains a masterclass in authentic Kaiseki, where every dish is a work of art.
Mornings at Serre provided the perfect start, with a breakfast spread that balanced variety and freshness in a bright, welcoming atmosphere. From the heartfelt welcome to the exceptional dining, the Okura remains the gold standard for luxury and comfort in Amsterdam.
