First Impression

Visiting Nara for the first time felt like stepping into a living history book, and my excitement was peaked by staying at the JW Marriott Nara. As the city’s first international luxury hotel, it carries a certain prestige that is felt the moment you arrive. The lobby is absolutely stunning—a masterclass in sophisticated interior design that blends modern elegance with subtle nods to Nara’s rich heritage. I found myself immediately amazed by the warm atmosphere and the seamless check-in process, setting a perfect tone for a refined springtime escape.

Sakura Afternoon Tea

The Sakura Afternoon Tea was a true highlight, offering a vibrant tableau of spring across the table. This seasonal experience celebrated the delicate harmony between the sweetness of ripe strawberries and the gentle fragrance of cherry blossoms. Each item was thoughtfully crafted, allowing me to savor the shifting nuances of the season with every bite.

The Spring Menu Highlights:

  • Savoury: The selection was inventive, featuring marinated scallops with strawberry and a unique Sakura shrimp and cabbage quiche with masala spice. The beef pastrami with Nara strawberry marinade and the marinated Sakura sea bream provided a sophisticated balance of salt and fruit.
  • Sweets: The dessert tier was a work of art, including a Sakura and Greek yogurt verrine, strawberry mousse with pistachio crémeux, and a delicate Sakura and vanilla Mont Blanc. The strawberry and Sakura bonbons were the perfect finishing touch.
  • Scones & Condiments: Freshly baked mint and vanilla scones alongside Sakura scones were served with a delicious strawberry and black tea confit and a bright lemon and honey spread.

Spending an elegant afternoon wrapped in the soft breeze of spring, surrounded by these meticulously prepared treats, was an unforgettable sensory experience.

1 Bedroom Executive Suite (Corner)

I absolutely loved the 1 Bedroom Executive Suite (Corner). It was the same expansive luxury I crave, spanning over 92 sqm of thoughtfully designed space. The suite features a plush king bed and a completely separate living area, perfect for lounging after a day of sightseeing. The bathroom was a dream—fully marbled with double vanity units, a large separate bathtub, and a refreshing rain shower.

A standout feature of this suite is the evening turndown service, which adds that extra layer of JW Marriott care. Furthermore, staying in this category granted me exclusive Executive Lounge access, providing a private space for hors d’oeuvres and relaxation throughout the day.

Dinner at Azekura

My first dinner was at Azekura, the hotel’s signature Japanese restaurant. I opted for the Kaiseki dining experience with a curated beverage pairing, specifically the Komabue menu.

The meal began with a seasonal cold appetizer of firefly squid and mussels with a rich shuto cream. This was followed by a clear clam soup with snow fungus and a hint of sansho leaf. The sashimi course featured two kinds of fresh catches served with Nara soy sauce and charcoal salt. The “Small Hotpot” was a standout: a delicate Red Snapper Shabu-Shabu with Nara shiitake mushrooms and Yamato Tachibana pepper. The combination dish featured bottarga-grilled fish and needlefish sushi, leading into the main rice course—a fragrant Sakura sea bream and shrimp rice. We finished with a refreshing seasonal fruit platter.

Indoor Pool and Sauna

The Indoor Pool is a beautiful sanctuary of sophistication. Heated to the perfect temperature, it features a relaxing whirlpool that serves as the ultimate retreat. Whether you are looking for a refreshing start to your morning or a way to recharge after exploring Nara’s historic temples, this stylish haven provides a tranquil escape. It perfectly bridges modern luxury with the quiet spirit of Japanese heritage, making it one of the most serene spots in the hotel.

Breakfast In-Room Dining

There is nothing quite like waking up to a seamless blend of comfort and elegance. I enjoyed a traditional Japanese Breakfast delivered directly to my Executive Suite. The set was beautifully presented, featuring a perfectly folded omelet, the grilled fish of the day, fresh sashimi, and steamed rice. A highlight was the Asuka soup, a local Nara specialty. Paired with fresh orange juice and a pot of premium sencha green tea, it was a peaceful, private way to begin a day of exploration.

Massage Treatment at SPA by JW

The Ultimate Aroma Therapy Experience at SPA by JW was exceptional. The journey began with an Aroma Scent test to select a therapeutic blend tailored to my mood. The bespoke head-to-toe massage was expertly delivered, balancing mind and body with every stroke. The spa’s minimalist decor favors simplicity over complexity, creating a serene wellness sanctuary that feels miles away from the outside world. It is a must-visit for anyone looking to find true stillness in the heart of Nara.

Executive Lounge

Access to the Executive Lounge is a premier benefit of the Executive Suite. It offers a refined environment for guests to enjoy a curated breakfast featuring both Western and Japanese dishes. During the day, it serves as a quiet spot for Afternoon Tea with premium sweets. In the evening, the atmosphere shifts as guests gather for hors d’oeuvres and drinks. The elegant setting and attentive service make it the perfect home base within the hotel.

Dinner at Silk Road

For a different culinary perspective, dinner at Silk Road was a revelation of local flavors. The Chef Dinner menu celebrated the harmony between Nara’s climate and nature.

The meal opened with seasonal amuse-bouches, including canola flower and Sakura shrimp tacos and a Spanish mackerel confit spring roll. The tartare of Nara persimmon, sea bream, and scallop was elevated by a Yuzu espuma. For the main courses, I enjoyed the sautéed catch of the day with braised mountain vegetables and a spectacular Prime Wagyu beef sirloin grill seasoned with Nara soy sauce and wasabi purée. Dessert was a refreshing fresh melon and sencha jelly with a coconut and cardamom blancmange—a light, spicy, and sweet conclusion.

Cocktail at Flying Stag

To end the evening, I highly recommend a cocktail at Flying Stag, the hotel’s stylish pub and bar. With its beautifully designed sofas, warm hearth, and curated artwork, it’s the ideal place to unwind. My personal recommendation is the “Full Bloom” cocktail.

This drink captures the essence of gazing at cherry blossoms on a spring breeze. The fresh green notes of tequila and lime juice evoke the elegance of peak-bloom Sakura, while a salted cherry blossom floats on top, mimicking petals dancing in the air. It is spring in a glass.

Stefano's Verdict

My stay at JW Marriott Nara during the Hanami season was nothing short of iconic. As the first luxury international property in the area, it manages to provide a world-class experience while remaining deeply respectful of Nara’s ancient traditions. From the “Full Bloom” cocktails to the exquisite Sakura-themed tea and the serenity of the Executive Suite, every detail was meticulously planned. If you are looking for a sophisticated, tranquil base to experience Japan’s most beautiful season, this hotel is undoubtedly the premier choice. It is a memorable escape that I cannot wait to repeat.
