First Impression
Returning to Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo feels less like a hotel check-in and more like a warm homecoming. This was my second time staying at this legendary property, and the experience remains as peerless as ever. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by the friendly, familiar faces of the staff, whose hospitality defines the Japanese concept of omotenashi. I was promptly escorted to the Executive Lounge ‘Le Ciel’ for a private check-in, an exclusive privilege for Suite guests. This sanctuary offers a peaceful start to the stay, where guests can enjoy light morning meals, refined tea times, and evening canapés.

Executive Lounge Le Ciel with Pagoda and Sakura View
Once the check-in formalities were seamlessly completed, I felt no rush to head to my suite. It was the perfect hour for tea time, and the lounge was bathed in the soft spring light. From my seat, I had a breathtaking view of the ancient Three-Story Pagoda framed by blooming cherry blossoms. The spread was a delight: savoiry canapés, delicate sandwiches, and warm quiches sat alongside seasonal Danish pastries generously filled with fresh fruit. To finish, an array of petit gâteaux, cakes, and jellies provided a sweet, colourful brightness to an already perfect afternoon.
1 Bedroom Prime Suite (Corner)
For this stay, I chose the 1 Bedroom Prime Suite (Corner), the exact same room type I loved during my last visit. Spanning a generous 60 m² (646 ft²), this suite is a masterclass in classic elegance. Being a corner unit on a higher floor, it offers a direct, panoramic view of the historic Chinzanso Garden. The layout features a separate, spacious living room for lounging and a tranquil bedroom for rest. The bathroom is equally luxurious, boasting a separate bathtub and shower, double vanities for ample space, and the softest robes and slippers that make “staying in” feel like a true event.
Sunset and Sakura Stroll along Kanda-Gawa River
Golden hour under the Sakura at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo is pure magic. As the sun began its descent, I stepped outside for a scenic stroll toward the famous two-kilometer cherry blossom alley along the Kanda-gawa River, located just moments from the hotel gates. It is the quintessential setting for a spring evening in Tokyo. I watched the sky transition into soft, dusty shades of pink that mirrored the heavy clusters of petals above. The warm glow of the setting sun hitting the blooms created an ethereal, glowing atmosphere—a peaceful, fleeting moment that defines the beauty of the Hanami season.
Dinner at Mokushundo (Stone-Grilled Cuisine)
Tucked away in the quietest corner of the hotel’s sprawling gardens lies Mokushundo, a charming restaurant housed in a Showa-era building. Here, they specialize in a unique style of stone-grilled kaiseki, where premium ingredients are prepared on lava stones sourced directly from Mount Fuji.
For dinner, I experienced the exquisite ‘HANASAKURA’ Menu. Each course was a celebration of spring’s bounty, beginning with a starter of snow crab and cabbage enveloped in a delicate broth gelatin, topped with cauliflower and a bright lime foam. The appetizers followed in a beautiful procession: banded blue sprat with Udo and mustard, a chilled ajillo of shrimp and scallops, tender bamboo shoots, and guinea fowl paired with Chinese toon and savoury miso.
The warm dish was a highlight—succulent cherry salmon served with canola flower and butterbur shoot, accompanied by quinoa and a wild vegetable sauce with a hint of dry-cured ham.
Then came the main event: the Stone Grill. I watched in awe as abalone, Japanese spiny lobster, and two cuts of Kuroge Wagyu beef—the loin and the fillet—were seared to perfection alongside three kinds of seasonal vegetables. The meal concluded with a comforting rice set featuring seasoned rice with clam and octopus, ginger, and ciboulette, served with miso soup and pickles.
For dessert, a refreshing seasonal ice cream and fresh fruits provided the perfect final note.
Night Sakura Sea of Clouds
The tranquil Chinzanso Garden is a historical treasure, home to over 100 cherry trees. However, what truly sets this hotel apart during Hanami is the Sakura Sea of Clouds. This is a special nighttime iteration of their famous Tokyo Sea of Clouds. After sunset, a veil of light-pink mist begins to rise over the garden, perfectly evoking the delicate hue of the cherry blossoms. When combined with the soft, strategic glow of 10,000 hidden lights, it creates an otherworldly, ethereal atmosphere. Walking through the pink fog felt like stepping into a dream, capturing the fleeting, fragile magic of the season in a way no other place in Tokyo can.
In-Room Breakfast
The following morning, I decided to fully embrace the serenity of my suite. I ordered the Japanese Set Breakfast, which was delivered with impeccable timing. Dining in the comfort of my living room, I looked out the window to see the morning version of the Tokyo Sea of Clouds rolling through the garden below. Savouring traditional grilled fish, tamagoyaki, and miso soup while watching the white mist weave through the cherry trees was the ultimate luxury. It was a slow, mindful start to the day that felt incredibly private and indulgent.
Stefano's Verdict
My verdict on staying at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo is that it remains an iconic destination, particularly during Japan’s most anticipated cherry blossom season. While many places in Tokyo offer views of the flowers, Chinzanso offers an immersive, multisensory experience—from the “Sakura Sea of Clouds” to the historic garden strolls and the refined tastes of Mokushundo. It is a rare pocket of peace in a bustling metropolis. If you are looking for a stay that is deeply rooted in tradition yet effortlessly luxurious, this is a memory you will cherish long after the last petal falls.
