Set where the emerald landscapes of West Flores embrace the azure expanse of the Flores Sea, TA’AKTANA, A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, is a sanctuary of timeless beauty. Inspired by the intricate Lingko rice terraces of the Manggarai people, the resort’s name translates to “Green Land.” Indeed, it honours the deep-rooted heritage of this storied land. Consequently, the whispers of ancient seafarers intertwine with the rhythms of island life, inviting travellers on an unforgettable journey of indulgence and renewal.

An Exquisite Arrival – Overwater Villa
Upon arriving at this haven in Labuan Bajo, the service is immediately apparent. After check-in, my private butler whisked me away by buggy to my spectacular overwater sea villa. Surrounded by breathtaking 360-degree views of the Flores landscape, the villa serves as the ultimate sanctuary. Inside, luxury sets the tone; from the rose gold finishes to the Dyson hairdryer, every detail is considered. Moreover, finding a bottle of Laurent-Perrier on arrival was a delightful touch. Unquestionably, unwinding on my private deck whilst overlooking the sea felt like true paradise.
Furthermore, the villa is a sophisticated haven designed to recharge the senses. Whether you are diving into crystal-clear waters or witnessing a fiery sunset, the experience is transformative. With amenities including SMEG appliances and Byredo toiletries, the standard of luxury is, in my view, on another level entirely.
Japanese Culinary Artistry at Taba
Dining at Taba is a masterclass in open-flame cooking. Indeed, the restaurant’s name suggests an essence of fire, and the chefs certainly deliver on that promise with innovative flair. For instance, the Wagyu Tsukene—minced wagyu paired with foie gras—was a revelation of texture. Subsequently, the Robata-grilled Miyazaki Japanese A5 sirloin was prepared to absolute perfection over Binchotan charcoal. Finally, the Mango Kakigori provided a refreshing and delicate conclusion to a meal defined by passion and craftsmanship.
Morning Rituals at Leros
Subsequently, the morning at Leros offered a spectacular open-air dining experience. My private butler escorted me from the villa, ensuring a seamless start to the day. Framed by a majestic view of the sea, the horizon stretched endlessly before me. Moreover, the menu features international delights alongside the finest Indonesian flavours. I particularly enjoyed the scrambled eggs with prawn and a side of vibrant fresh mango juice. To finish, the decadent French toast was exemplary.
Island Adventures
Meanwhile, the jetty serves as a gateway to aquatic discovery. Whether one chooses to paddleboard across tranquil waters, kayak, or take a thrilling water scooter ride, the activities are diverse. Truly, there is something for every adventurer here, ensuring that memories of the azure waters last a lifetime.
Rejuvenation at Di’a Spa
Next, I retreated to the Di’a Spa for a 90-minute immersive experience. Every breath connects you with the soothing embrace of Mother Nature at this relaxing spa in Labuan Bajo. Indeed, it is a rare opportunity to disconnect from the world and fully relax. Furthermore, the treatment rooms offer a serene environment that encourages deep peace. As the therapist works to restore your balance, the rhythmic sounds of the island seem to fade away. Thus, you leave feeling entirely renewed.
Authentic Indonesian Dining at UMASA
Furthermore, dinner at Umasa presented an authentic journey through the Indonesian archipelago. Each regional dish serves to reflect the nation’s rich traditions and majestic heritage. In particular, every bite feels like a sincere tribute to local culture. Therefore, dining here is an essential experience for those seeking local immersion.
A Quiet Breakfast at the Overwater Villa
Then, a tranquil morning at my Overwater Villa proved remarkably peaceful. The private terrace provides a beautifully still, unhurried sanctuary to welcome the day. There is a wonderful, grounded elegance to enjoying a warm English breakfast tea alongside a classic Full English Breakfast in this setting. Yet, the true luxury remains the absolute stillness of the raw Komodo landscape and the silent azure sea. Consequently, this private moment feels like the perfect pause in an otherwise busy life.
Elegant Afternoon Tea at NERA LOUNGE
Later, I indulged in a refined afternoon tea at the Nera Lounge. Delightfully, the selection of traditional Manggarai sweets honoured the region’s heritage, perfectly complemented by artisanal teas.
Sunset Rituals at NERA LOUNGE
As golden hour descended, the sunset ritual commenced. There is a certain stillness to dusk at TA’AKTANA; the landscape becomes bathed in amber, coral, and violet hues. Thus, savouring a smoky cocktail and canapés whilst watching the day fade into evening felt cinematic. Finally, a dinner at Leros completed the day, offering elevated flavours that perfectly encapsulated the resort’s commitment to quality.
Stefano Malachi’s Verdict
Ultimately, TA’AKTANA is a triumph of design and service. It is rare to find a property that so successfully balances modern, high-end amenities with a deep, respectful connection to local culture. From the impeccable overwater villas to the thoughtful culinary programme, every element is curated for the discerning traveller. Therefore, if you seek a sanctuary that combines raw natural beauty with absolute refinement, this Luxury Collection retreat is peerless. Without a doubt, I look forward to returning to this green land of wonder.
