First Impression: A Royal Welcome

The history of the InterContinental Paris Le Grand is deeply intertwined with the grandeur of the Second French Empire. It was a time of immense change and renewal in Paris, led by Napoléon III and his consort, Empress Eugénie. On May 5, 1862, Empress Eugénie herself inaugurated the hotel, a landmark moment that solidified its status as a symbol of Parisian luxury and sophistication.

Stepping into the lobby, the weight of this history is palpable. The hotel’s prime location, opposite the newly completed Opéra Garnier, placed it at the very heart of the city’s cultural and social scene, a role it has maintained for over a century and a half. My arrival was handled with the grace befitting such a storied institution. Instead of the standard reception desk, I was whisked away for a private check-in at the InterContinental Club Lounge. This seamless transition from the bustling Parisian streets to the hushed, exclusive sanctuary of the lounge set the tone for the stay: one of effortless service and personalized care.

One Bedroom Suite: A Front Row Seat to the Palais Garnier

Ideal for a getaway in Paris, my one-bedroom Junior Suite was a masterclass in French aesthetic. The suite featured an elegant bedroom and a separate living room, balancing contemporary comforts with a soothing, Parisian chic palette. The design felt curated rather than decorated, with rich textiles and classic moldings that whispered of the 19th-century elite.

The true pièce de résistance, however, lay beyond the French doors. With two private balconies directly facing the Opera House, the suite offered a magnificent view of the Palais Garnier. Watching the sun reflect off the golden statues of the opera house from my own private vantage point was a surreal experience. It provided a perfect place to enjoy a five-star rest, allowing me to retreat into a sanctuary of classic comfort while remaining visually connected to the most beautiful city in the world.

CAFE DE LA PAIX

Quel magnifique dîner à Paris! The iconic Café de la Paix is more than a restaurant; it is a monument to French gastronomy. Also inaugurated by Empress Eugénie in 1862, this dining room is a riot of frescoes and gilded stucco. Sitting on the corner of the Boulevard des Capucines, I felt as though I had stepped into a living painting.

The evening started with the celebrated French Onion Soup. Its golden broth, rich and deep in flavor, was topped with exquisite, molten Comté—a testament to time-honored perfection and arguably the finest version of the dish in the city. Next, a moment of true theater unfolded with the ceremonial table-side filleting of the sole. Witnessing the waiter’s masterful savoir-faire as the fish was prepared with surgical precision was a highlight of the night. It was a true voyage culinaire, blending historical grandeur with culinary excellence.

Club InterContinental

Located on the first floor with windows overlooking the glass-roofed courtyard of La Verrière, the brand-new Club Lounge at InterContinental Paris Le Grand welcomes guests for an exclusive experience. In an intimate atmosphere, the Club Lounge offers personal service and premium benefits that truly enhance the stay.

At any time of the day, I found myself drawn to this elegant, delightfully hushed setting. In the mornings, it served as the backdrop for a gourmet breakfast—a spread of artisanal pastries and perfectly brewed coffee—before starting off a new day in the French capital. In the afternoons, it hosted a delectable traditional English tea time, offering a moment of repose. Perhaps most memorable were the evenings; the Club Lounge is the ideal place to sit and sip on a glass of chilled champagne, watching the soft light filter through the building as the city begins its nocturnal transition.

LA VERRIERE

To experience “Belle Époque” Paris, one must spend time under the Verrière at the Grand Hôtel. Much like the metal domes of the Grand Palais or the Musée d’Orsay—those “cathedrals of steel and iron” for which Paris is famous—the Verrière at the hotel is strikingly spacious and bright.

This 800-square-meter winter garden is a peaceful oasis in the heart of the capital all year round. Giant palm trees stand alongside armfuls of white flowers, dotted with lampposts reminiscent of the Parisian covered passages. In this modern-day atrium, the bustling energy of Paris comes to a standstill. I spent a quiet afternoon here enjoying a quick coffee and an array of intricate desserts. The setting is majestic yet imbued with a distinctive Parisian charm, making it the perfect spot for reflection amidst the floral scents and the soft hum of convers

Stefano's Verdict

My time at the InterContinental Paris Le Grand was every bit as magical as my first impression. The impeccable service was a constant, with the staff anticipating every need and making each moment feel entirely effortless. From the private check-in to the final departure, I felt like a guest of the Empress herself.

The suite was a sanctuary of classic comfort, offering a quiet escape from the vibrant city outside. Sleeping in such a refined space, surrounded by exquisite details and the ghost of the Second Empire, was a luxury in itself. The hotel isn’t just a place to stay; it is an experience that enriches the Parisian journey, leaving a lasting memory of elegance and grace. It exceeded all expectations, proving that while Paris may change, the grandeur of Le Grand remains eternal.
