Throughout February 2019, one of Hutong’s most anticipated events of the year will return. The award-winning Northern Chinese restaurant will celebrate Chinese New Year with a bespoke menu created especially for the occasion.
This year’s Chinese New Year celebration will take place on Monday 4th February as a reunion dinner. A reunion dinner takes place on the eve of Chinese New Year, and is often spent with family, especially for those with family members away from home. It is considered the most important get-together meal of the year. During the celebratory dinner, guests will be entertained by a traditional lion dance, a calligrapher to write good luck wishes, be given noise makers to ward of ‘nian’ or evil spirits and receive red pocket Chinese horoscopes for the Year of the Pig ahead.
Guests will see both familiar and less well-known Chinese dishes on the special menu, which will run throughout February, and this will be the only menu served for reunion dinner on Monday 4th February. The menu will include authentic ingredients and dishes that are traditionally eaten for Chinese New Year such as pork and glutinous rice cake, Chef Wang’s specialism in spicy Sichuan cooking will also be showcased throughout.
Highlights will include:
- Chicken salad dressed with sesame, soy & chilli
- Pork rib marinated in homemade Sichuan peppercorn sauce
- Scallop & prawn wonton with homemade chilli oil

2019 will be the Year of the Pig, the 12th zodiac animal which represents luck, fortune, and wealth. Hutong will pay homage to the Year of the Pig by offering each table bespoke Hutong chocolate ‘piggy banks’ to break open at the table, revealing special Hutong chocolate coins to enjoy at the end of the meal. Every table will receive the pig complimentary during celebra- tions on the 4th of February, and will feature on the dessert menu for £12 for the rest of the month.
The Hutong bar team will also be joining the celebrations, creating a special New Year cocktail inspired by the Year of the Pig. The Chinese New Year cocktail will be created with Roku gin, ginger syrup, Darjeeling tea, Luxardo maraschino liqueur, egg white, yuzu juice. Served with Hutong’s home-made Chinese Five Spice pork crackling, the cocktail will provide a unique twist as guests toast to good luck in the new year.
